Long turnaround time to identify microbes in the bloodstream has been the norm for blood cultures as Gram staining remains the gold standard in many laboratories—until now. Institut Hospitalo-Universitaire Méditerranée Infection (IHU), located in France, has partnered with Hitachi High-Tech to develop a rapid identification method using the Hitachi TM4000Plus Tabletop Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM).
Blood culture samples can be prepared on slides and dried, then loaded into the TM4000Plus SEM for analysis, significantly reducing the time and steps required by traditional Gram staining, while offering insight into the microbes themselves. Up to twelve cultures can be loaded for analysis at one time, reducing the time for culture to identification to one hour.
