New Products – Vortex®-ES4 and Vortex®-ME16, the Next-Generation Silicon Drift Detectors (SDDs)

-

The upgrade plans for synchrotrons around the globe has begun, in the next 5 years, most synchrotrons around the world will be upgraded, have started their upgrade, or have plans well under way to begin their upgrade. The outcome will establish the need for silicon drift detectors (SDDs) to enable vastly improved throughput.

Hitachi’s ultra-high-speed Vortex® SDD sensors are regarded as the superior sensors for throughput and resolution at high count rates, but even these sensors may not meet the beamline scientists’ wishes for faster and more accurate x-ray analysis.

Therefore, Hitachi High-Tech America, Inc. has begun a development plan to address this requirement with an advanced manufacturing and efficient repair process enabling the introduction of the next-generation Vortex SDDs to improve solid angle for enhanced detection efficiency and throughput, tailored for the next-generation synchrotron applications.

These innovations represent significant strides in compactness and performance, setting new standards for SDD technology.

The first two detectors in this new range of Vortex SDDs are the Vortex-ES4 and the Vortex-ME16. Both are designed to enhance solid angle and throughput applications.

The Vortex-ES4 SDD, a compact 4-sensor detector, offers a total collimated area of 160 mm² within a compact 21 mm x 21 mm square snout tip, maximizing the solid angle for enhanced detection efficiency.

The Vortex-ME16 SDD features 16 sensors with a total area of 640 mm² within a 41.5 mm x 41.5 mm snout tip, tailored for next-generation synchrotron applications.

Both SDDs feature

  • Probe lengths of up to 500 mm
  • 0.5 mm thick SDD sensors
  • Superb energy resolution, even at high count rates
  • Thermoelectric cooling (TEC) technology for extremely fast detector temperature stabilization
  • Additional customized configurations under special agreement
