Observations at The Woodlands of Hitachi High-Tech Science Insect Hotel carried out and new Hotel created.
We are engaged in biodiversity conservation activities at the Woodlands of Hitachi High-Tech Science around Fuji-Oyama Plant by regenerating an artificial cedar and cypress forest as a satoyama, a place where people used to live, and converting it into an environment more conducive to living organisms.
As part of these activities, since 2021 we have been building and installing the Insect Hotel as a habitat for insects. On November 2nd 2022, 14 employees volunteered to observe and renew the tree branches and bamboo that were packed inside the existing hotel, and to construct and install a second hotel.
As in the previous year, the framework for the new hotel was constructed from scrap wood used to transport office products, and the materials to be incorporated were collected from the forest on the premises of the office, utilizing natural materials such as pine cones, dead branches, bamboo and fallen leaves.
According to our observations of the existing hotel, many holes that had been made in the tree branches packed inside the Insect Hotel were filled, probably in preparation for overwintering, which raised hopes for a habitat survey next spring.
In addition, in the main area of the forest, to protect the growing environment of the native species, we carried out extermination work on the goldenrod, an exotic species.
We will continue our activities to enrich the forest, attract diverse creatures and monitor the habitat.
