Lampshade Making: Biodiversity & Conservation Activity for the Home
Hitachi-Tech Group carries out activities to conserve biodiversity in the Tokyo area such as forest maintenance work and installing insect hotels at Takao Forest Nature School, a facility that is run by the Seven-Eleven Foundation.
In addition to activities at Takao Forest Nature School, the Sustainability Management Department holds biodiversity conservation activities that can be done at home as a way to make even more employees aware of Hitachi-Tech Group activities to conserve biodiversity and give them opportunities to interact with nature.
This time, volunteers from Hitachi High-Tech Group companies in Japan created lampshades using items such as twigs that had been gathered at Takao Forest Nature School. For this activity we first held an online briefing in late December to give an overview of Takao Forest Nature School and its activities, and to explain the main points in making a lampshade. After that, the participants started to create their lampshades in their own homes, and they sent us photos of their work and creative process in January 2024.
Once again many employees participated in our event; they and their family members enthusiastically shared their creative ideas to make a lampshade. We received a lot of feedback from the participants, who sent us photos of the finished lampshades as well as ones showing them being made. The lampshades were adorned with items such as decorative tape and stickers, and the finished creations were heartwarming and highly original.
We hope that creating a lampshade by making effective use of natural materials gathered on-site during forest maintenance will be an opportunity to reflect on how people can interact with natural forests, and on the importance of forest biodiversity.
The Sustainability Management Department will continue to promote biodiversity conservation activities, including some online, and will plan activities so that many employees can engage in them on-site or online.
